In the globalized and less than ideal world we live in today, it seems there is no more room for dreams and utopia. But is it possible to live without dreams?
WORTHWHILE DREAM speaks of the dreams and utopia of people who “have passion to change the world” like Apolonio de Carvalho, a 90 year-old Brazilian who fought for his ideals against Franquists and Nazis in the Spanish Civil War and in The French Resistance of the Second World War. A boundless saga, which went on in Brazil in the fight against the military dictatorship in the 60's and 70's and in exile, in Argelia and France. Through his life history the documentary brings to life the main political events of the 20th century and reveals the new forms of utopia present in the anti-globalization campaigns.
The documentary pictures the dreams and utopias of a generation of men and women who dedicated their lives to the fight for justice, liberty and democracy, making Apolônio de Carvalho's story their leading line. His boundless struggle with the republicans in the Spanish Civil War, the French Resistance against Nazism and in the combat against military dictatorship in Brazil during the 60's.
There was a time when many lives were generously given to save humanity. Lives lived on the turn of the century, dedicated to the battle for fairest societies, with principals built upon the best human elements. Lives, in their majority, anonymous. As a legacy we don't get much more than traces left on common sense that feeds historical narratives.
Few times we have the opportunity to walk alongside these people, who made their lives at the battlefields, at the barricades, at the daily work of persuasion and changing political systems, mostly in a silently, clandestine way. Some of them dare relating it to their own voice. It's the case of "Vale a Pena Sonhar” an autobiography by Apolônio de Carvalho, the starting point of the documentary feature project "Worthwhile Dream".
