About the film

Production: Superfilmes and Thomaz J Farkas.

Project Selected by Petrobras Cultural Program.

This is an unprecedented documentary short containing images captured more than 50 years ago. In April 1954, during the festivities of the fourth centennial anniversary of São Paulo, I went to Ibirapuera Park with my 16mm wind-up Kodak and shot six minutes of a wonderful concert by Pixinguinha, Donga, João da Bahiana, Almirante, Alfredinho do Flautin, Jacó Palmieri and Benedito Lacerda.

The black-and-white footage has been lost ever since. At  the end of last year, on a day I had been going through some of my old film cans, there it was, complete and in perfect state, Pixinguinha’s film.
What could I say about those six minutes of the "Velha Guarda do Samba", which, as far as I know, is the only existing footage of the group? I haven´t recorded the sound, only images, but The Moreira Salles Institute identified the songs played by the musicians (“Ele e Eu” e “Patrão prenda seu gado”) and added sound to the film”.
