Assombração
synopsis . about director . about film

“Assombração” is a documentary picked up in digital vídeo, with final copy in 35 mm and about 80 minutes of duration, which, like the own title suggests, will focalize fantastic stories which scare the imaginary of northeast people with their ghosts, “lost souls”, wolf men, mules-without-head and so many other supernatural entities.

The documentary will be all constructed from a staging which we will do in Limoeiro city, in the east side of Pernambuco State, with a population with about 58 thousand of inhabitants. This staging has text of the awarded pernambucano dramaturgic Newton Moreno (Shell Award 2005): “Assombrações do Recife Velho”, free adaptation of homonym book of the sociologist Gilberto Freyre. The theatrical producing has direction of the own Newton Moreno and will be accomplished by the group Os Fofos Encenam, which produced the play in Recife and in São Paulo on 2005 and 2006.

The documentary “Assombração” has as one of its main goals to return back to pernambucano’s people the rich material collected and analysed by Gilberto Freyre. We will document the arrival of the theatrical group and the team of filming in Limoeiro, the preparing of staging, the incorporation of story tellers in the local assembly and the cast testing so that the people in the city can participate. We will reserve a balance chair of production so that everyone can count their most creepy (while very funny) terror histories.

We will be documenting during all the time the transformations that this “artistic interference” will promote in Limoeiro, at the same time that we will be rescuing and preserving in the audiovisual language this melting pot of specific traditions in which go up dead and monsters absolutely real; ghosts who insist caming from the past to color the colors of the present, observes Mary Del Priore in the introductory text of the last edition of “Assombrações do Recife Velho”.

We chose Limoeiro because, besides being a small city, without the urban problems of a big center like Recife, the municipal district is a very rich region with supernatural stories, which mix influences of different people. Limoeiro is irrigated by the river Capibaribe and was a village of Indians Tupi. There are plenty of ghosts and legends associated with indigenous traditions, African, Portuguese, Jewish and Dutch.

Located in a region full of lemon trees, the city was based by priest Ponciano Coelho, who settled down there to Christianize the Indians. Some years later, a Portuguese man called Alexandre Moura got there, devoted of “Nossa Senhora da Apresentação”. The saint’s image head a huge fascination over Indians and the Portuguese didn’t late to build a little church near his home, attracting many families from the village. The awesome atmosphere of Limoeiro began to be known with mysterious vanishing of the saint’s image. Old documents show that Mauricio de Nassau had a special attraction about the place which put Limoeiro on the top of the list of villages under his jurisdiction.

The “Morta Forrozeira” and ghosts who come to pinch banana sweet in the kitchen, while it’s prepared at night, and by the end they spoil everything with ghost’s saliva. The Encantamento Street and the dutch who shows up once in a while to terrify the persons with his transparent skin and Red beard. The Golden Mouth, purple and yellow ghost, who plays with everybody with his swelled face of dead person and his putrid breath and golden grinned teeth. The Wolf Man and the virgin girls who became mules-without-head after sleeping with priests who don’t follow the chastity book. The story of Branca Dias the jewish pursued by Christians, and who threw out all her silverware in the bottom of the streamlet, today named Silver Streamlet. “Papa-Figo”, terminal sick who got to extend his life after eating a black boy’s liver. Old Suassuna’s ghost and his mania of distributing roses to black girls, as an attempting to repair the cruelties against slave Tonha. White Old and Red Goat. The amazing story of “Dona Rogaciana” who forgot to put on her husband his short drawers at the time to prepare his body, and was charged by him with frequent beats on the armoire of the bedroom. And further this Dona Bem-Vinda’s death watch, who was born again several times frightening “carpideiras”, going and coming from hell to paradise. One thing more: Hairy Leg of the northeast folklore who dronks cachaça and takes off the young girls’ virginity.

These and other stories put together by Gilberto Freyre and remade drama literature by Newton Moreno will be exhibited in Limoeiro and, as was told, we will make a documentary showing the impact of this exhibition which will provoke the imagination over the local population. After the exhibition, we will interview persons and will rescue other fantastic tales. We will still open a space so that the tales tellers from Limoeiro, could participate artistivly in the movie: telling stories and directing scenes which actors or with the local population itself about ghost tales which were never written and remain only in the oral tradition being transmitted from generation to generation.
